Welcome to the memorial page for

Elwood Martin

October 13, 2016

I'd like to start by introducing myself - my name is Marsha Backhouse and I am Elwood's sister’s best friend of 20 years and also known as Albert's adopted daughter. On behalf of the Martin Family, thank you all for being here today.

In all my years with the family I gotten to know, I’ve seen a family that defined the true meaning of what ‘family’ looks like and shown unconditional love. Elwood is preceded by his paternal grandfather, Leo Martin, and maternal grandparents: Elwood and Laura Watson. He is survived by his paternal grandmother, Lilian Martin. He is the son of Albert, stepson of Rachel. He has 2 sisters: Suanne and Jennifer (Aaron), 3 brothers: Joe, Mark and Jerry, and 2 half-sisters: April and Diane Bourgoin. He has 3 nieces: Erica, Madison and Aurora and 1 nephew: Chanse.

Elwood was a man beyond many words, he had a quirky personality. He had long winded stories, could push your buttons and hit your last nerve at times, but the one thing that always stuck out and rose above all, was his big, enormous heart. I watched Elwood over the years work hard, take care of his friends and family and help raise wonderful nieces and a nephew. Elwood was always looking for love (I think that's how he got the nickname Woody) and had hopes of having his own family one day.

It saddens me and everyone else here today to have to say goodbye to our son, brother, uncle or great friend. Elwood was the kind of person who would be the first person to always come in a time of need and do anything to help out, he was a shoulder to cry on and lean on and when it came to kids he was fun loving, playful and never missed a moment that was important to you. He was always there. He was never selfish and always managed to put an unforgettable smile upon your face. Now, Elwood, the flip of your hair, your goofy smile, your storytelling and your big heart… well it will forever be embedded in our hearts. Take care, my friend, my brother, my uncle, my nephew, my son - until we meet again, rest in peace Woody.
