Garry Schneider Obituary

With his family by his side, Garry Schneider passed away peacefully at home on March 2, 2021, at the age of 75 years.

For those of us so fortunate to have had Garry in our lives, we will forever be blessed with memories of his quiet and gentle presence, his kindheartedness, and his sly sense of humour.

Garry (Turk, dad or grandpa) was born on July 31, 1945 in Loon Lake, Saskatchewan. He was an electrician by trade and moved his family to Fort McMurray, Alberta, in 1972, for work in a booming oil town. Following his retirement from Suncor in 2002, he relocated to Golden Nodding Acres near Boyle, Alberta.

Garry’s most special place was his property at Golden Nodding Acres. Early on, Garry and his young family spent much time clearing land and building a cabin and a woodshop, that for many years after, would become a special retreat for family and friends to share in. Hot dogs by the fire, water skiing, golf at local courses and winter hockey games played on the lake cleared by Garry himself are just a few of our most cherished memories.

For Garry, it was always about family. This meant many, many miles spent driving across Alberta and Saskatchewan to watch his grandkids play hockey and baseball. Seeing grandpa in the stands celebrating saves, goals and home runs are special memories never to be forgotten.

Garry loved to curl, golf, and play hockey - most notably on the checking line.  He made the best canned and pickled goods hands down, and was an expert woodworker. Many of our homes have been touched by some of Garry’s handiwork, and, in return, he wanted nothing more but a good cup of hot tea.

Garry will be profoundly missed by his loving partner, Eleanor; his three children, Tim, Jodi and Jacqueline, and their spouses Cheryl, Gus and Phil; and two stepdaughters, Jamie (Kyle) and Naticia (Ahmed). His spirit will live on in the lives of his seven grandchildren: Riley, Haley, Craig, Matthew, Coltin, Abigail and Alexia. He will also be terribly missed by Georgie, his ever-present miniature sheltie companion.

He also leaves to mourn his loss, two brothers: Keith (Georgina) Schneider, Daniel (Bernilda) Schneider; sister, Jean (Grant) Gall as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Garry will be greatly missed by his close family friends, Ron and Judy Shandro and his lifelong friend Tony Weisbecker. Garry was predeceased by his wife, Donna Schneider, and his parents, Edward and Irene Schneider.

When we are able to gather again, there will be a celebration in honour of Garry’s life.

Honorary Pallbearers are Riley Higdon, Haley Higdon, Craig Schneider, Matthew Schneider, Coltin Barrington and Alexia MacDougall.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the The Cross Cancer Institute of Alberta.
