Winifred "Winnie" Johanson

With grateful hearts for a beautiful life, the family of Winifred “Winnie” Johanson of Calgary Alberta, formerly of Lac La Biche, Alberta announces the passing of their beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister on Thursday, June 11, 2026 at the age of 91 years.

Winnie was a creative and spirited woman who enjoyed painting, knitting, writing poetry (some of it even got published!), singing and working on puzzles. She took great pride in her artistic pursuits and loved music; she had a beautiful singing voice and was known to break into a yodel from time to time. Winnie had a deep love for all animals, especially dogs; they provided great companionship and joy throughout her life. In her later years, Winnie rediscovered her love of painting, made many friends, discovered a fondness for lattes and embraced life with enthusiasm; she enjoyed good conversation and laughter and remained interested in life right to the end.

Leaving to mourn with cherished memories are her children: Laurie Chapman of Bellevue, Washington, Janet Andersen (Andrew Shannon) of Vancouver, B.C., Dean Andersen of Montreal, QB, and Monica (Andy) Curran of Burlington, ON; grandchildren: Ryan (Noemi) Chapman, Matthew (Kitty) Chapman, Sean Vogler, Tahlon Sweenie (Tasidy), Kimberley Tiessen (Shane), Graham Andersen (Rachelle), Evan Andersen, Cydoney Curran (Scott), and Maggie Curran (Jacob); great-grandchildren: Zayde Vogler, Cordell Tiessen (Angel), Spencer Tiessen, Jayson Andersen, Quinn Andersen, Charlotte Chapman, Lily Sweenie, Lucy Irvine, and Theodore Chapman; and sisters: Claire (Don) Gourley and Emily Nevill.  Winnie will also be remembered by her many nieces, nephews, extended family & friends.

Winnie was predeceased by her daughter, Karen Andersen (September 9, 2025); her parents, John & Bernadette Johanson; and her brothers, Willie Johanson, Stanley Johanson, and Emil Johanson.

Graveside Service: Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at 1:00 p.m., Mission Cemetery, Lac La Biche, Alberta with Father Anselmo Landoy officiating.
